Stadia Lab

Stadia Lab is a research group focused on studying historical and contemporary examples of urban stadium projects. It is housed in the School of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

The Lab integrates research undertaken at the Bachelor, Master’s, and Ph.D. level, as well as work by a diverse group of faculty across disciplines affiliated with the Lab. We explore how stadium design intersects with a range of technological, ecological, economic, social, and political issues, as well as the broad non-sporting ends to which stadia are often the means. As such, for instance, we are interested in how stadia are deployed (either successfully or not) as tools for large-scale urban renewal and economic regeneration, or how sustainability—not generally thought of as a sporting issue—increasingly plays a role in stadium design and construction. The output of the Lab comes in the form of books, journal articles, master’s theses, Ph.D. dissertations, expert testimony, and a range of other public presentations.
